Add Kite to Slack

Kite works inside your Slack workspace, so adding it to Slack is the first step. This page covers what you need before you start, what the install asks for, and what Kite does the moment it joins a channel.

Before you start

  • A Kite account. The Slack install is done by a signed-in Kite team member. Sign in at kite.ai with Google or with a one-time code sent to your email. See Login & Sign Up.
  • A Slack workspace where you can install apps. Whether an admin has to approve the install depends on your workspace's Slack policy, not on Kite.
  • A channel for Kite to work in. Many teams use their existing marketing channel or create one such as #growth. Kite works in any channel you invite it to, and it also answers direct messages.

Kite's Free plan includes the Slack integration, so you do not need a paid plan or a credit card to get started. See Plans & Pricing.

Add Kite to your workspace

  1. Sign in to Kite, then click Add me to Slack on kite.ai or in your Kite workspace.
  2. Choose the Slack workspace you want to add Kite to.
  3. Review the permissions and allow them. Kite asks to read messages in the channels, groups, and direct messages it is part of, to be mentioned, to post messages, to manage and join channels, to add reactions, to read user names and emails, to work with files, and to search.
  4. Invite Kite to a channel the same way you would invite a teammate, for example /invite @Kite. Kite never joins a channel on its own.

What Kite does when it joins

As soon as Kite is added to a channel it says hello, reads your company's website, and replies with one or two offers of work it can start on right away. Accept one in the thread and Kite gets going. You can also skip the offers and ask for something else. See Quickstart.

Bring in your teammates

Anyone in the channel can talk to Kite and give it the OK. To link a teammate's Slack identity to your Kite team so they can also use the browser workspace, they click the Connect Kite account button Kite offers, or a team owner or admin adds them. See Team access.

Channel settings

For each channel, your team can choose how Kite replies: follow threads automatically (the default), respond only when tagged, or retire from the channel. Kite treats the first channel your team engaged it in as its home channel, which is where digests and report announcements land.

The browser workspace

Kite also has a browser workspace at kite.ai, where you open the website editor, browse integrations, view analytics and leads, and manage billing. Slack is where Kite brings you its work. The browser is where you make hands-on edits and manage the account. See Login & Sign Up.

Troubleshooting

  • The install asks for an admin. Your workspace restricts app installs. Ask a Slack admin to approve Kite, then try again.
  • Kite is in the channel but quiet. Mention it directly with a question. If the channel is set to respond only when tagged, Kite waits to be tagged.
  • A teammate cannot open the browser workspace. They need to connect their Kite account from Slack, or be added by an owner or admin. See Team access.
